Portfolio is a collection of offerings and capabilities owned, offered by, and/or supplied to the enterprise.
Portfolio Capability
Portfolio capability is the business capability system which functions to realize mission capabilities (products, systems and services for external customers), technology capabilities (products, systems and services for internal business use in support of mission capabilities), and social and cultural capabilities (e.g., community service, charities and internships).
The purpose of the portfolio capability is to enable and assure the abilities of the portfolio of operational capabilities including program/project capabilities to provision and manage the system and service offerings of the enterprise.
Portfolio Management
Portfolio management is the business capability management of the portfolio capability.
The purpose of portfolio management is to enable and assure the management and abilities of the portfolio of operational capabilities are controlled, balanced and aligned to the mission and needs of the enterprise as a whole.
Portfolio Management Responsibilities
The business manager role is responsible for portfolio management of the portfolio capability.
Portfolio management work products include portfolio management ideas, requirements, plans, risks, opportunities, reviews, decisions and action items. Specific examples include capability requirements and capabilities plan.
Portfolio Architecture
The portfolio architecture is the business architecture of portfolio management of the capabilities capability.
The business manager role uses the capabilities architecture to support portfolio management responsibilities and activities.
The purpose of the portfolio architecture is to provide a management structure to enable and assure the portfolio capability is controlled, balanced and aligned to the mission and needs of the enterprise as a whole.
The structure includes mission capabilities (products, systems and services to external customers), business management capabilities, technology capabilities, information technology capabilities, social capabilities, cultural capabilities (community service, charitable contributions and internships).
Portfolio Architecture Responsibilities
The business architect role is responsible for architecting the portfolio architecture in support of the portfolio management responsibilities of the business manager role.
Portfolio architecture work products include portfolio architecture concepts, descriptions, models, views, viewpoints, specifications and analyses. Specific examples include capability concepts, capability maps and capability model.
Portfolio Team
As shown in Figure 49 – Portfolio Team Concept, portfolio is interconnected with and interdependent on integration, process improvement, data, configurations, records, information utilization, applications, procured services, infrastructure, telecommunications, system abilities and service abilities.
